How do private lessons work?

If you are interested in getting hitting, pitching, or fielding lessons, here are the steps:

Step 1
Look over the highly skilled professional Baseball Instructors or Softball Instructors listed on our website. There you will be able to see what exactly qualifies each instructor to work with your son, your daughter, or yourself.

Step 2
Call, text, or email the instructor of your choice directly, as all instructors are independent contractors of On Deck. In this call, text, or email, it is best to give the instructor some context of your son or daughter’s (or your own) age, current experience level, and what type of lesson—hitting, pitching, fielding, or a mixture of these types—you were interested in acquiring.

Step 3
One of our highly skilled professional instructors will answer your inquiry by clearly providing their pricing options and working to figure out a mutually available starting date and time for you and the instructor to meet at On Deck Batting Cages for your private lesson. The instructors themselves will handle scheduling the cage time and paying On Deck afterwards. You just pay the instructors directly in a way that you both mutually agree upon (cash, check, Venmo, etc.) and not through On Deck.

Step 4
Meet the instructor at On Deck and receive a professional lesson. If the lesson went as great as we know it will, it is best practice to set up a future date and time with the instructor at the end of your lesson.

Note on Private Lesson Pricing:
As independent contractors of On Deck, instructors make all of their own rates. However, the current market has the average private lesson price at $45 per ½ hour. A few of our instructors offer packages that bundle a set amount of lessons for a discounted rate, but the nature of these packages is between you and your chosen instructor.

Do I need a reservation to use your facility?

We welcome walk-ins and reservations, alike. Reservations are not a requirement to utilize the facility.

However, Monday through Friday from 5-8 pm, it is recommended that you give us a call at (562) 426-4487, as these are our busiest times.

Call us anytime and our friendly staff will reserve your desired time and take down your name and phone number to ensure that the cage is ready to go when you arrive.

Do you have a glove shop in there?

We do! It is called Soto Gloves and they can handle ALL of your glove-related needs. They can restring an old glove, oil and restore worn leather, or professionally break in a brand-new glove. Also, they offer their vast collection of Soto brand gloves.

They can even build you or your player a full custom glove from scratch—allowing you to choose the type of leather, the different colors, type of webbing (with recommendations for which type is best for each player’s position), and any type of patch or embroidery that you want, in order to make your glove truly unique.

They even measure the custom glove directly from the player’s hand, in order to ensure the perfect fit. Also, they professionally break in all custom gloves for you (if you’d like) and offer a lifetime guarantee of servicing the custom glove by re-lacing or rejuvenating the leather for you anytime.

Are there any waivers I need to sign before using the facility?

Nope. Just come in and take your hacks on any of our 14 cages!

However, some of the other businesses within On Deck do require wavers. Such as EM Speed & Powerand Dr. EROD Sports Medicine, but their amazing staffs will quickly handle those wavers with you when you utilize their services.

How much does it cost to borrow bats or helmets?

It is no charge to use our bats and helmets. Just come on down and our knowledgeable staff will help you pick out a bat and helmet that fits just right.

Are the batting cages open to the public?

Yes, most definitely. On Deck is completely open to anyone of any age or skill level!

How young is too young for private lessons?

There is not an absolute answer to this question, as different youngsters possess different levels of focus, coordination, and interest in the game as they develop. However, most of our instructors agree that generally between 6-8 years old is the very earliest age range that they feel lesson teachings can be both retainable and beneficial to young players.

Do I need to bring my own balls for live-pitching?

Nope, we have you covered.

You are definitely welcome to bring your own real baseballs or softballs to use at the facility. However, we can also provide you with real baseballs and/or softballs at no charge.

What is your policy on pets?

On Deck welcomes all official service animals.

Yet, due to the noise of many bats hitting balls and the preponderance of excited children, the inside of On Deck is not an ideal place for animals who are not acting in an official service capacity.

Can you do cricket?

Yes, we love being able to accommodate cricket players or teams.

Ask about our Homeplate machine. It can easily replicate a proper bowl and can even make the ball swing!

Can I rent your turfed area for soccer, football, rugby, etc.?

Absolutely! On Deck welcomes all sports and athletes. We have accommodated practices and events for all of the sports listed above and many more.
